About UsWorkLife Consulting is a site put together by Almuth McDowall, BSc, MSc, PhD. Almuth holds a Masters in Occupational Psychology, and her doctoral thesis is one of the few that have concerned themselves with employee development. Almuth lectures in occupational psychology and psychometrics at postgraduate level, and regularly trains HR practitioners on test use, work/life balance and other topics. Almuth also holds certificates in coaching, which feed both into her educational and practical work. Our AimsWorkLife Consulting aims to promote the cross fertilisation between research that is rooted in psychological theories and frameworks and practice by continuously interpreting research in the light of its practical implications. Research in the domain of work and organizational psychology has perhaps become somewhat diluted over the last few years, as more and more researchers are joining industry, postgraduates decide on a careers in consultancy and those remaining in the field tending to work within business schools rather than psychology departments. Moreover, due to an increased pace of change in corporate environments, clients are often demanding 'quick fix' solutions with focus on the here and now. Thus, there is a danger of diluting one of the core essences of occupational psychology: a thorough research based approach, which remains a necessary premise both for ensuring cost-effectiveness of existing processes and for ensuring employee well-being. It is often said that HR practice and business aims should be aligned with each other in order to maximise organisational functionality. Taken to the extreme, this may imply that business strategy is put before people: a stark contradiction to the often heard expression that people are a company's greatest asset. Thus, psychologists and human resource practitioners should put the welfare of individual employees at the core of any activities or recommendations.| Home | |
